Heavy-Duty Impact Wrench

A pneumatic or cordless impact wrench rated for heavy torque output is one of the most-used power tools in diesel work. Removing wheel lugs, axle hardware, and drivetrain components by hand would be impractical. Look for a 3/4” or 1” drive impact for the heaviest applications, and a 1/2” drive for more moderate tasks.

Diesel Compression Tester

Compression testing is a fundamental diagnostic step for diesel engines. Unlike gasoline engines, diesel engines have much higher compression ratios (often 16:1 to 22:1), so the gauge needs to handle pressures exceeding 600 PSI. A diesel-specific compression tester is not interchangeable with an automotive model — the threads and pressure ranges are different. Tool Care & Maintenance Tips

A diesel shop is harder on tools than most environments. Heat cycles, heavy use, chemical exposure, and physical abuse are part of the job. The mechanics who have the nicest tools after 20 years are the ones who took care of them from the start.

Keep tools clean. Wipe metal tools down after use to remove grease, oil, and coolant. These aren’t just cosmetic issues — grease buildup on ratchets and socket drives causes slipping and accelerates wear. A parts cleaning brush and shop rags cost almost nothing and extend tool life significantly.
